Strategies for Winning Asylum by Overcoming Stereotypes in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Based Cases

Thursday, April 7 at 5:00pm at the New York LGBT Community Centre

This workshop will provide an overview of asylum law as it relates to applicants who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.  We will discuss how to overcome difficulties applicants for asylum based on their sexual orientation and gender identity have in meeting their burden of proof as to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Proving sexual orientation or gender identity can be complicated by having hidden sexual orientation or identity in one's country due to societal repression and fear of ostracism and persecution, and having had relationships with, marriages and children with members of the opposite sex. Particularly, lesbians face establishing sexual orientation may be lesbian applicants may face additional cultural/societal barriers due to family obligations and economic and societal reliance on males within their countries. At the end of the program there will be time for questions and answers.

Program moderators: Nicole R. Abruzzio, Esq., and Alexander V. Bibicheff, Esq.
