With Australia's proposed 'refugee swap' deal with Malaysia - which could see LGBT asylum seekers sent to that unsafe country - now held up in Australia's High Court, there was an astonishing development this week as the Immigration Department, the bureaucrats, raised whether mandatory detention itself should be ended. This comes after numerous riots and reports of increasing cases of 'self harm' in the sprawling and expensive detention estate.

In this report on conditions at the Christmas Island detention centre, a representative of the workers says that some detainees are digging their own graves and sleeping in them.
